Statement

My artwork is inspired by the great mid-century feminist artists who recognized and honored traditional women's decorative work and elevated it through their art - embracing all the pattern, the complexity, the bright colors, the swirling lines and shapes. Art trends tend towards simplification, but why simplify? The world is bright, intense and complex. Why not embrace it? I choose to do just that with my art.

News and Events

Lately, I've been enjoying painting in the Berkshires and get inspiration every day from driving to the top of Mnt. Greylock. Climbing higher, the various lookouts offer ever-changing view of the clouds and distant mountains of Massachusetts, New York State and Vermont. I'm always struck by how fragile the landscape looks; as if it is pockets of air covered with a thin veneer of glass that catches the most subtle changes in light and reflects back endless color combinations.

These views inspired my new acrylic painting series, Earth Stretched Thin. Of course, underneath the mountain surface is the hardest of rocks, granite, but after a summer with news of fires, floods and other ravages of climate change, the surface earth seems increasingly delicate. And, of course, the surface of the earth that contains all of life is only 3 to 46 miles deep!

Earth Stretched Thin are 24" x 36" acrylic paintings on canvas with 2.75" deep stretchers. This gives the canvas a sense of solidity with the colors and textures of the paintings are very soft and seemingly delicate - stretched and painting right around the wide edges. This way, they appear to float our from the walls.
